Shalimar Bagh Srinagar: A September Visit Filled With Memories, Mughal Beauty & Wazwan
Shalimar Bagh Srinagar: A September Visit Filled With Memories, Mughal Beauty & Wazwan
Some places are beautiful because of what we see, while others become special because of what we have lived there. Shalimar Bagh is one such place for me.
On 25 September, we visited the magnificent Shalimar Bagh in Srinagar, Kashmir. It was a day filled with laughter, beautiful surroundings, photography, history, delicious food, and a few memories that took me years back.
The garden was full of tourists. Families, couples, friends, and visitors from different parts of the country were enjoying the beauty of this historic Mughal garden.
Some flowers had already started fading, and the garden was showing the first signs of the approaching winter. Yet, there was something incredibly beautiful about that seasonal transition.
The lush greenery, towering trees, flowing water, and changing colours of nature made the entire experience memorable.
And yes, we enjoyed every bit of it!
Our Arrival at Shalimar Garden
One interesting thing about our visit was that we booked our entry tickets live by scanning the barcode outside the garden.
The process was convenient, and we were able to arrange our tickets right there before entering.
As soon as we stepped inside, the magnificent architecture, traditional wooden entrance, stone pathways, and beautiful Mughal-style surroundings immediately caught our attention.
The garden was crowded, but that itself added to the lively atmosphere. Everyone seemed to be making memories, just as we were.
Walking Through the Mughal Heritage
Shalimar Bagh is not just another tourist attraction. It is a living reminder of Kashmir's royal past.
The garden was developed by Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1619 for his wife, Empress Nur Jahan. It was initially named Farah Baksh, meaning "the delightful."
Later, in 1630, Emperor Shah Jahan ordered its expansion under Governor Zafar Khan, who named the expanded garden Faiz Baksh, meaning "the bountiful."
Walking through the garden, one can still feel the grandeur of the Mughal era.

It is fascinating how a garden created centuries ago continues to attract thousands of people.
The Garden Reminded Me of Nishat Bagh
One thing I kept noticing during our visit was how much Shalimar Bagh reminded me of Nishat Bagh.
There are so many similarities between the two gardens.
The central water channels, fountains, beautifully arranged terraces, Chinar trees, traditional Mughal architecture, and the peaceful combination of nature and history create a familiar feeling.
Nishat Bagh was designed by Asif Khan, brother of Nur Jahan, in 1633. It has twelve terraces, while Shalimar has its own distinctive royal layout and historic sections.
Both gardens reflect the Mughal vision of combining architecture, flowing water, greenery, and natural beauty.
However, every garden has its own character.
For me, visiting Shalimar felt like revisiting an old memory through a different window.
A Beautiful Moment With Friends
Travel becomes more meaningful when you have good company.
We spent time walking around, taking photographs, enjoying the surroundings, and sharing jokes. The tourist rush did not take away from our enjoyment.
Sometimes, the best part of travelling is not the destination itself but the people standing beside you.
We all enjoyed a lot, and the day turned into one of those outings that you wish could last a little longer.
The Memory That Came Back to Me
There was another side to this visit, something more personal.
Shalimar Bagh brought back a memory from a difficult chapter of my life.
Years ago, I had appeared for a job selection process. I was 28 years old, while the maximum age limit was 27.
I was selected, and for a moment, I felt that my dream had finally come true.
But later, I was rejected because I was over the prescribed age limit.
Imagine the feeling.
First, the happiness of being selected, followed by the disappointment of being told that you were not eligible because of just one year.
It was heartbreaking.
I remember coming to this very garden that day. I sat there quietly, surrounded by greenery, trees, and the peaceful atmosphere.
While everything around me looked beautiful, my mind was occupied with questions, disappointment, and thoughts about what had happened.
I still remember that feeling.
Returning to Shalimar after all these years was different. This time, I was here with friends, smiling, taking pictures, and enjoying life.
The place had not changed in my memory, but I had moved forward.
Sometimes, revisiting a place reminds us not only of where we have been but also of how far we have travelled emotionally.
Wazwan Lunch After Exploring the Garden
No Kashmir outing feels complete without good food!
After spending time at Shalimar Garden, we went outside for a delicious Wazwan lunch.
A visit to Kashmir's famous Mughal gardens followed by traditional Kashmiri food is a combination that is difficult to forget.
We enjoyed our meal, shared conversations, and continued reliving the beautiful moments of the day.
For us, it was not simply a sightseeing trip. It was a complete experience of friendship, history, food, and nostalgia.
September at Shalimar: Flowers Fading, Winter Approaching
September has its own charm in Kashmir.
During our visit on 25 September, some flowers were already fading. The garden was not displaying the same fresh floral appearance associated with peak spring.
Instead, there were subtle signs of the approaching autumn and winter.
The Chinar trees, however, remained beautiful, with hints of seasonal colour appearing in the landscape.
I personally find something poetic about this transition.
Flowers fade, leaves change colour, and the seasons move forward, but the beauty of nature never really disappears. It simply changes its appearance.
That is perhaps one of the most beautiful lessons a garden can teach us.

Final Thoughts: More Than Just a Tourist Destination
Our 25 September visit to Shalimar Bagh was filled with laughter, photographs, history, delicious Wazwan, and unforgettable moments.
The tourist rush was considerable, some flowers were fading, and winter was slowly making its presence felt.
Yet, we enjoyed every moment.
For me, this garden will always hold two different memories: one of disappointment from a time when a job opportunity slipped away because of an age limit, and another of happiness, friendship, and a wonderful day spent with loved ones.
Perhaps that is what makes travelling so special.
We do not always visit places simply to see them. Sometimes, we return to reconnect with our past, appreciate our present, and realise how much life has changed.
Shalimar Bagh was not just another destination on our itinerary. It was a journey through history, friendship, food, and my own memories.
And I would happily visit it again.
